FAQs

Melon Holidays breaks are exclusively for solo or single parents, carers or grand parents and their children. Being in a group of families in a similar situation means that parents have adult company on an evening and daytime experiences can be shared.

All of our hotels and glampsites are family-friendly and hand-picked by Melissa.

Read on through our FAQs for more information.

How do your single parent holidays work?

Melon Holidays breaks are exclusively for single parents/ carers/ grandparents and their children. Being in a group of like-minded families means that parents have adult company on an evening and daytime experiences can be shared. All of our hotels and glampsites are hand-picked, family-friendly and in excellent locations. Our activity breaks and ski holidays are structured, but our beach holidays allow you the freedom to do as much or as little as you want.  All our holidays focus on building a support network whilst on holiday.

When is the best time to book my holiday?

The earlier you book the better as many of the hotels offer early booking discounts. Booking last minute means that you will have less choice of availability.

How do I book a place on one of your holidays?

To book a place on a Melon holiday, you need to complete the online booking form and pay the 30% deposit, which you can settle by credit or debit card or bank transfer.  Alternatively, call us and we can make the booking for you over the phone.

How do I pay for my holiday?

You can pay securely on our website with a valid credit or debit card or bank transfer.  We do not accept AMEX. There are no surcharges for payments made by credit or debit card.

When are the payments due?

A 30% deposit must be paid in order to confirm your booking.  The remaining balance payment is due 8 weeks prior to departure. If you are booking with less than 8 weeks to go to your departure date, the whole balance is due at the time of your booking. We will send an email with a link that allows you to pay online when the balance is due to be paid.  Note that if the balance is not paid when due, we will consider the booking cancelled (please see cancellation charges in our Terms and Conditions).

Can I pay by instalments?

Yes, of course. The initial 30% deposit is required to secure a place on one of our holidays, after which you can pay off any amount of your balance due at any time, as long as the holiday is paid in full 8 weeks before departure.  Just call us to make a payment over the phone or email us requesting an online payment link.

Are there any hidden costs?

No. All costs are clearly stated on each holiday page under the ‘Prices & Booking’ section. Our holiday prices detail all inclusions.  Optional extras are also clearly stated and only charged for if chosen.

Will the price I pay on the website go up after I have booked?

For UK holidays, the price quoted is the price you pay. For overseas holidays, we reserve the right to amend the price of your holiday after it has been booked, in the unlikely event of extreme currency fluctuations.  If the increase is less than 2% of your holiday price, we will absorb the additional cost.  If the increase is between 2%-10% we will issue an amendment invoice for the additional amount.  If the increase is more than 10% you will have the option of cancelling your booking with a full refund.  Please see our terms & conditions for full details.

When will I receive my travel documents?

Upon booking you will be emailed a confirmation reference and receipt for payment of your deposit.  Once you have paid the balance you will be emailed the final balance receipt.  Travel documents will be sent to you by email approximately 3 weeks prior to departure. These will generally include full address and phone number of your hotel, your holiday itinerary, hints and tips, destination information and what you need to do on arrival at the airport.

What can I expect from a Melon holiday?

Melon holidays are small group holidays with the aim of helping single-parent families create friendships and a holiday support network. When you book your overseas holiday, we will suggest flight arrival times so that we can co-ordinate your transfers with other Melon Holiday families and so that you are not waiting too long to depart.  The transfer coordinator will let you know what time your welcome get-together is.  This will allow you to meet everyone in your group and the children will all be given a Melon wristband so that you know which children to keep a look out for.  Before the end of the meeting, your children will have made friends and you will feel at ease knowing that you are amongst a like-minded group of adults.  Your coordinator will tell you about the hotel, resort and what there is to do.  They are there to answer any questions you may have.  They will also provide you with a local contact number should you need any help during your holiday.

How do I get to the hotel upon arrival?

A transfer coordinator will be waiting in the arrivals hall with a “Melon Holidays” sign and you will take a transfer mini-bus or coach to your hotel.  If there are many arrivals on the same day with large waiting times between each, then we will offer a shuttle service in which case detailed instructions will be emailed to you before your departure.

Will vegetarian food be provided?

Most of our overseas hotels offer an extremely varied and delicious buffet for the evening meal and there are always various vegetarian options.  For both UK and overseas holidays, please note any dietary requirements on your booking form.

.

My child has a nut allergy. Will they be safe eating the food provided?

Our accommodation providers try their best to cater for all eventualities, however, we cannot guarantee that they will be entirely nut free, or free of any trace of other allergens (dairy or gluten etc).  Please make a note of the allergy on your booking form so that we can provide this information to the hotel.  You must also speak with the restaurant manager when you arrive at your destination so that they know who you are, can be aware of the allergy and advise you of the foods to avoid/ choose.

Do we have to go on your group days out?

Not at all, but there will be one included excursion on your overseas holiday so it would be a shame to miss it!  Days out on our UK holidays are optional (except on the activity breaks).

What kind of people come on your holidays?

Our holidays are open to any single-parent, single-grandparent or single-carer and their child/ children.  People who book on our holidays are generally sociable, friendly and open-minded.

I'm not a single-parent, but my wife cannot get time away from work to come away, can I still go on one of your holidays?

Of course!  Melon Holidays is not solely for divorced, separated or widowed single parents.  There is no longer a “traditional” family and we know that it can be a challenge at times for both parents to be able to get away and you don’t want the kids to miss out.  As long as you are the sole adult travelling with your children you are more than welcome to book with us.

I'm a grandparent travelling with my grandchildren, can I join one of your holidays?

We welcome any single-parent or guardian to travel with Melon Holidays.  We recognise that often it isn’t the parents that take the children away and it could be an aunt or uncle, gran or grandad.  As long as you are the sole adult travelling with the children and have parental responsibility for them whilst on holiday, you are welcome to book with us.

What are the age groups of the children?

There is no minimum age on our “beach” holidays, but for our activity breaks many have a minimum age of 5 years, but the age will be detailed with the holiday information.  All our holidays are open to any single-parent families with a child/ children under the age of 18. Children tend to get on with each other irrespective of age, with the older ones taking the younger ones under their wing!

I want to book a holiday that is fully booked- are there any places left?

When you see the “Fully booked” stamp there are no more rooms available for that holiday.   The most popular holidays do sell out quickly, so it’s worth booking in advance to avoid disappointment.  Occasionally, we get cancellations so please contact us if you would like to be put on a waiting list.

I’ve made a booking, but haven’t heard anything.

Once you book a holiday, you’ll receive an email confirmation and payment receipt.  Please check junk folders, as sometimes emails can get caught up as spam.  If you have not received anything after 48-hours, please contact us so that we can check our system.

Do you arrange transport in the UK?

Due to our customers being located all over the UK, it isn’t feasible to arrange transport for everyone to get to a holiday destination or airport.  For our UK breaks, we recommend posting on our forum to see if there is another family going on the same holiday who you could meet in advance and share transport and costs, if you don’t have a car.  Some customers use the train, Megabus or National Express.

How safe is my money with Melon Holidays?

Your money is safe and insured. In accordance with The Package Travel, Package Tours Regulations 1992, all passengers booking with Melon Holidays Ltd are fully insured for the initial deposit and balance paid to us arising from the cancellation or curtailment of travel arrangements due to the insolvency of Melon Holidays Ltd. For more information please go to our trust account partners page. In addition, the UK’s Package Tour Regulations require us to hold any monies paid by clients in a Trust Account and your money is only released from this account once your holiday is complete.

How safe is it to pay online?

We aim to safeguard your family holiday at every stage. Our payment partner is SagePay who have the highest level of card data security (PCI DSS Level 1 compliant) so you can pay for your holiday with peace of mind and be protected against fraud.  Your credit or debit card number is never stored by us.

What is, and what isn’t, included in your single parent holiday?

All our holidays have different inclusions, so please check the “Holiday inclusions” section on each holiday page.  Transport to UK glampsites and hotels is not included.  Flights to overseas destinations are not included, however, return transfers from the airport to your resort hotel are included (unless otherwise stated).  The meal basis varies per holiday. UK activity breaks will include various activities and ski holidays include ski equipment hire, lift pass (ski lessons can be booked through us in advance).

Why are flights not included in your holiday package?

We are so fortunate in the UK to have an amazing choice of low cost and charter flights to anywhere in Europe.  Not including flights in our packages gives our single-parent families the flexibility to choose their own airline and get the best flight price for themselves (booking in advance or during special offer periods).  From our research, booking the flight separately is often better value than having it packaged.

How do I book my flights?

We recommend that you book your flights online using one of the main flight search engines or direct with the airline of your choice.  If you are not confident in doing this yourself, contact us and we will help you find a suitable flight which you can then go ahead and book yourself.

I’ve never been on one of your holidays before – I don’t know anyone!

There’s no such thing as a stranger, only friends we haven’t yet met!  Please don’t worry, you will not be the only one going on their first Melon holiday with this concern, so join one of the holiday forums and start chatting to others who will be on your holiday and put your mind at rest.

How many families join your single parent holidays on average?

Our group sizes vary, from just 3 or 4 families up to 15 families.

Can I reserve a holiday whilst I check my flights?

Yes of course. Just call us and we will hold a room on your chosen holiday for 24 hours whilst you check your travel arrangements.

Do your hotels have Kids Clubs?

The resort hotels that we use do have Kid’s Clubs. This gives our single parents the opportunity to leave their children in a safe and fun environment whilst they have a couple of hours relaxing by the pool with a book – and no interruptions!

Will it be cheaper for me just to book everything separately online with various travel websites?

It’s unlikely that you will be able to get the exact holiday cheaper by booking all the elements separately with different online travel companies.  Whatsmore, you will not have the financial protection offered by Melon Holidays, you would not get the in-resort support of a local representative and you are very unlikely to meet other single-parent families to create a holiday support network and group of friends.
